What Are The Types Of Slag?
Slag is a byproduct in the ironmaking process of a blast furnace. In the process of ironmaking, iron oxide is reduced to metallic iron at high temperatures. Impurities such as silica and alumina in iron ore react with lime to form a molten material mainly composed of silicates and silicoaluminates. After quenching and cooling, it becomes a loose and porous granular material, which is called blast furnace slag, abbreviated as slag.
There are many types of slag, such as cast iron slag (slag discharged during the smelting of cast iron), steelmaking pig iron slag (slag discharged during the smelting of pig iron for steelmaking), and special pig iron slag (slag discharged during the smelting of pig iron with iron ore containing other metals, such as manganese slag and magnesium slag).
